Brooks' session notes and progress updates
Introduction
Brooks did an awesome job, and I really enjoyed working with him. We focused on shooting, especially the two key parts of the shot: the feet and the follow-through — the beginning and the end. He was very responsive to the coaching. Once Brooks got his feet organized, it gave him a much more consistent start to his shot. We also worked on his follow-through, holding that position to help reduce the extra swinging motion. He mentioned that his dad had talked to him about using the backboard, so I encouraged him to use the glass, and he had a lot of success with it. We also did passing drills into a shot, whether the pass was for me or for him, and each time we made it a point to acknowledge our teammate by saying “good pass” or “good shot” while pointing for emphasis. Our last area of focus was running a play, helping him understand that basketball is often a series of connected actions — I do this so you do that. We worked on two plays together, one called “Coach” and the other called “Brooks.”
Homework: Work on the layups and using the backboard. Film some of his games so I can see some opportunities to improve.
